ELA A10

AR A5 Imagination Beyond Daily Life

In class we watched the film “The Village” directed by M. Night Shyamalan who was know for these types of films such as The Sixth Sense, Unbelievable, Signs, Lady In The Water. The technique he used was very eye opening and original cause I can’t think of a movie that shows the view from behind the characters head. The genre of this film is creepy and I totally agree with it because it always had this eerie feeling like something was behind you and yet nothing was there. I think the director stayed away from the blood and the guts because it is so over-used in horror movies like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street and Chainsaw Massacre. This movie has something original and new, in parts he kinda gave us a little spook by showing us tiny bits and pieces of the monster to keep us interested and always kept us at the edge of our seats. Some types of people who love getting scared and enjoy the rush of adrenaline, the feeling of something behind you, those types of people would love this movie, me personally it’s not my cup of tea but I did enjoy he suspense every once and awhile. The message the movie gives is “no matter how bad things seem it could always be worse” and “be thankful for modern day medicine”. Shyamalan gained tons of publicity and recognition from his previous movies than “The Village” because horror movie before him were stabbing and slashing, but his movies gave a spine tingling, skin crawling, hair-standing feel more than “oh you made a wrong turn, your dead”. Since I haven’t seen any of his other movies, just “The Village” I would give it a high rating maybe a 7/10 sure something’s weren’t good like not enough people dying (it’s how I like my movies not too many people die but just enough to fill me with tragedy) or the use of lighting could have been a little bit brighter in some parts like in the houses but also I loved the rustic feel of it before Ivy climbs the wall, and the suspense I got from it. His original movie “The Sixth Sense” was his highest rated movie and other movies after that never broke that record I think it’s because his first movie was the first one of its kind, after it he just started repeating it over and over again and never put out something new. That is my review on Shyamalan’s movie “The Village”
